In a continuation of my first-ever Best Of list of my articles from the past year, I present the middle bunch of the Top 12 (to recap 9-12, visit here).
8. Technology on the sporting pitch came alive with a trip to Philadelphia to explore the Adidas miCoach technology at the MLS All-Star game, a story I turned around for Sports Illustrated print. In a whirlwind trip (my West Coast to Philly trip and back was about 24 hours total, including travel) I was able to witness the technology in action and chat with MLS players about using it in a nationally televised contest. Check out the story here.
7. As I’ve gotten deeper into sports motif coverage, traveling to Brooklyn to cover the launch of Nike’s new NFL uniforms in the spring for a Sports Illustrated article gave me an up-close look at the new threads. Interviewing top-flight NFL athletes about uniforms and Nike designers, all while looking over the new technology and design, offered a full look at the new uniforms. Take a look here. I also offered a bit of a technology primer on TIME, so check that out here.
6. My first cover story for Engineering News-Record afforded me the chance to take in all the Elwha River restoration project had to offer. From two dam removals to a complete river restoration project unprecedented in our time, I explored the entire project. With that story behind a paywall, check out a different version of the same topic for a Popular Science print article here.
5. Sports design has meaning and I explored that meaning with a TIME article looking at the branding opportunity behind sports logos. I explored a host of major sporting leagues (NBA, MLB, NHL), talking to executives and designers about why their sports look the way they do. I used the new Brooklyn Nets look to anchor the piece, certainly a visual identity worth a look. Read my article here.
